Ahmedabad, India – June 12, 2025
A devastating tragedy unfolded on Thursday when an Air India aircraft carrying 242 people—230 passengers and 12 crew members—crashed shortly after takeoff near Ahmedabad’s international airport in western India. According to officials, there appear to be no survivors.
Eyewitness videos, shared on social media, captured plumes of thick black smoke rising into the sky from the crash site, located in a densely populated residential and commercial area to the south of the airport.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” said G.S. Malik, Police Commissioner for Ahmedabad. “Some locals would have also died” when the plane went down in a neighborhood housing both residential units and offices. He added that the exact number of casualties is still being determined.
The plane went down midday local time, just minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. Emergency response teams rushed to the scene, with rescuers recovering between 30 and 35 bodies from the crash site, according to early reports.
Earlier, local authorities informed Reuters that over 100 bodies had already been transported to a nearby hospital. Images shared by India’s Central Police Force on X (formerly Twitter) showed the aircraft’s tail section lodged in the wall of a building, while other photos depicted charred wreckage, fallen trees, and first responders navigating the scene near a residential complex.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time, and investigations are ongoing. India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to lead the inquiry into the incident, alongside international aviation experts.
The incident marks one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent Indian history. Air India and government officials have yet to issue a full statement, though condolences have begun to pour in from across the country and around the world.
This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
