Kabarnet, Kenya
The long-awaited dream of establishing a university in Baringo County is now a reality. The Government of Kenya has officially gazetted the University of Kabarnet as a constituent college of Moi University, as published in the Kenya Gazette on 13th June 2025.
This milestone marks a major step in expanding access to higher education in the North Rift region. The university is set to welcome its first cohort of students in September 2025.
Following consultations and a directive from President William Ruto in late 2024, leaders in Baringo agreed to establish the university’s permanent campus in Kabarnet town, on 50 acres of land donated by Kabarnet High School. While construction begins, the university will temporarily operate from Moi Teachers Training College (TTC) in Seretunin.
The University of Kabarnet will focus on social and applied sciences, offering programs that align with regional development needs, including:
- Education and teacher training
- Agriculture and environmental science
- Business and entrepreneurship
- Health sciences
- Information and communication technology (ICT)
The institution’s vision is to become a “preeminent higher education institution in social and applied sciences.” Its mission emphasizes discovery, innovation, and knowledge sharing to improve quality of life. The university is guided by four core values: Excellence, Innovation, Integrity, and Collaboration.
As a constituent college of Moi University, it will benefit from the mentorship and academic quality systems of one of Kenya’s oldest and most respected universities. With gazettement confirmed, preparations for student admission are now underway. Academic and administrative staff recruitment will begin in phases, with course offerings and admission details to be released through Moi University. Construction of the permanent campus is expected to commence later in 2025.
