June 21, 2025 – Nairobi, Kenya — Thousands of Kenyans are expected to converge in Nairobi on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to participate in a nationwide demonstration commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic protests that shook the nation in 2024.
The “Gen Z Memorial March,” organized by families of victims, activists, and civil society groups, seeks to honor the memory of at least 19 young people who lost their lives during anti-tax protests last year. The march aims to spotlight calls for justice, police accountability, and urgent reforms to prevent future instances of police brutality.
Participants are set to gather at Uhuru Park at 10:00 a.m. before proceeding to key government offices, including the Office of the President and Parliament. Organizers plan to lay wreaths and hold moments of silence in remembrance of those who perished, underscoring the movement’s commitment to peaceful demonstration.
In response, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda has assured the public of comprehensive security arrangements to safeguard the protestors and maintain order. “We have engaged with the organizers and are prepared to facilitate a peaceful and lawful demonstration,” Seda stated.
Despite official assurances, concerns remain about the potential for disruptions. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua issued a cautionary statement warning of possible interference by criminal elements aiming to exploit the protest for unlawful purposes. He urged families and participants to exercise caution and prioritize safety.
The June 25 anniversary has prompted heightened security measures across Nairobi and other counties, with some public events such as the popular “Blankets & Wine” music festival canceled amid fears of unrest. Religious groups have also held solidarity prayers calling for justice and peace.
