Kambi Karaya, West Pokot (June 15, 2025)– A devastating incident has struck the Kambi Karaya goldmine in West Pokot County, where an unknown number of miners have been buried alive following a sudden collapse earlier today.
Rescue operations are currently underway, with emergency teams and local volunteers working tirelessly to reach those trapped beneath the debris. So far, one death has been confirmed, while several others remain missing.
The collapse occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, catching many miners underground. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a deep rumble before the earth gave way. Frantic efforts by fellow miners and first responders began immediately, as families and onlookers gathered at the site in anguish.
This tragic event comes just one week after a similar goldmine collapse in Turkwel, also in West Pokot, where four people were killed. The back-to-back incidents have heightened concerns about safety in the region’s small-scale and artisanal mining sector.
Authorities are on site coordinating the response, and additional support from disaster response agencies is being deployed. The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
This is a developing story. More updates will follow as information becomes available.
